Short answer. As of 29 June 2026, India does not have one nationwide Uniform Civil Code replacing all personal laws. Uttarakhand has enacted a state UCC framework and published official Act and Rules documents. For most families outside that framework, marriage, divorce, maintenance, custody and succession still turn on the applicable personal law, the Special Marriage Act, secular succession statutes, court orders and the parties' documents.
The keyword Uniform Civil Code attracts heavy search volume because it is a policy, news and civics topic. A useful legal page must answer the practical question: what changes for a person planning marriage, divorce, inheritance, a Will, or a family-property dispute?
What UCC means in practical terms
A uniform civil code is a civil-law framework that seeks to apply common rules to areas such as marriage, divorce, maintenance, adoption, inheritance and succession, instead of applying separate personal-law rules to different religious communities. In practice, the effect depends entirely on the text of the statute and rules that are actually in force.
That is why there is no single answer to "Does UCC apply to me?" The first questions are: where do you reside, where was the marriage registered or solemnised, which personal law currently governs the family, whether the Special Marriage Act route was used, and whether a state-specific framework applies.
The national position
Nationally, India continues to use multiple statutory and personal-law routes. Examples include the Hindu Marriage Act, Special Marriage Act, Indian Succession Act, Hindu Succession Act, Muslim personal law principles, Indian Divorce Act and other community-specific or secular statutes. A national UCC bill replacing this structure has not become an all-India operative code as of this update.

Uttarakhand UCC
The official Uttarakhand UCC portal publishes the Uniform Civil Code, Uttarakhand, 2024 (English) and Uniform Civil Code, Uttarakhand, Rules, 2025 (English). The portal also provides service registration and official downloads at ucc.uk.gov.in.
If your facts connect to Uttarakhand, do not rely on a news summary. Read the Act, Rules, amendments and government orders, then map your facts to the specific chapter and rule. Applicability may turn on residence, event date, registration status, pending proceedings and documentary proof.
Marriage, divorce and maintenance questions
For Delhi and most non-Uttarakhand matters, the immediate legal question usually remains the existing route: contested divorce, mutual consent divorce, maintenance, custody, domestic violence, settlement terms, or transfer petition. A UCC policy debate does not automatically alter a pending family-court case unless a binding statute applies to the parties and issue.
For ongoing family disputes, start with the matrimonial and family law page and the guide on grounds for divorce in India.
Succession, Wills and inheritance planning
UCC searches often come from families trying to understand inheritance. Outside an applicable UCC framework, succession may still depend on the deceased person's religion, the nature of property, nomination documents, family tree, Will, probate requirements and pending disputes. A valid Will can reduce uncertainty, but it must be drafted with the correct succession statute in mind.
For estate planning, read the wills, succession and probate practice page and the guide on making a legally valid Will in India.
